What is VCE VET Dance?

VCE VET Dance is a nationally accredited training program that allows students to gain a Certificate II in Dance (CUA20120) as part of their VCE studies, with the option to complete additional units toward Certificate III in Dance (CUA30120).

VCE VET Dance is a pre-vocational course, and will prepare you to audition for further training as dancer, dance teacher or choreographer. The course allows you to gain knowledge on the dance industry, how it works, what is expected of you and possible
pathways within dance.

CUA20120 Certificate II in Dance with selected units of competency from the CUA30130 Certificate III in Dance:

Does VET Dance contribute to my ATAR?

Yes VCE VET Dance contributes to your ATAR score in the following way: 2 solos (one in each dance style) contribute 50% to your ATAR score for VCE School assessed coursework contributes the other 50% of your ATAR score

What do I need to do to qualify?

There are no prerequisites to enroll in the VCE VET Dance course, although previous experience in dance will be an advantage. It is recommended that students take unit 1&2 before commencing units 3&4. Students may commence VCE VET Dance in year 10, accelerated, or year 11. If a student wishes to only complete units 3&4 they will have to apply to their school for consideration.

How It’s Delivered

DTO offers three delivery options:

Community Class

Join our virtual weekly class, taught by a DTO trainer. Students complete technique classes at their own studio while learning theory and assessments online.

Through Your School

Secondary schools can partner with DTO and deliver the program through their own qualified dance teacher. We provide full materials, support, and compliance systems.

Through Your Dance Studio

Studios may offer the program using their own team, with full support and resources from DTO, or refer students into our Community Class.

All pathways are fully supported and lead to the same outcomes.

What does the course involve?

Course Structure

VCE VET Dance CUA20120 Certificate II in Dance and CUA30120 Certificate III in Dance. VCE VET Dance course is delivered over two years part-time, an option for a 3rd year is also available. Students should preferably complete Units 1 & 2 (year 1) before enrolling in Units 3 & 4 (year 2).

VCE VET Dance study hours

The nominal hours for VCE VET Dance depend on which elective units/dance styles you choose, and range from 320 to 400 hours over the two years of the course.

Year 3

Where an additional non-scored Unit 3–4 sequence is used as an increment, the increment will be calculated using 10% of the fourth study score of the primary four.

If my school is not offering this subject can I still do it?

Absolutely! If you are currently attending at least one hour of technical training in each of your chosen styles you are already halfway there! If required our online classes are held after school (currently on a Thursday night) for 2 hours and deal with the VCE VET direct course work, your technique training remains with your current studio.

Frequently Asked Questions

This program lets senior secondary students gain VCE credits while completing a nationally recognised dance qualification through their school or studio.

Studios partner with DTO (RTO #45789) to offer Units 1–4. DTO provides assessment materials, moderation support and resources aligned with VCAA guidelines.

Students refine their performance and choreography skills, gain industry experience, and may contribute to their ATAR through Units 3 & 4.

Qualified trainers approved by DTO oversee delivery to ensure national standards and accurate VCAA moderation.
